It expose students to basic academic skills; e.g. how to manage time, learning strategies, and processing information from lectures and texts, which would help students cope with academic demands at the tertiary level.

In this course we have 2 assessment (100%) :-

Topic 4 - Memory, Improving Concentration & Reading System

Learning Pyramid

The Cone of Learning

Memory vs Brain

#Memory
  • Our ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall information and past experiences in the human brain. It can be thought of in general terms as the use of past experience to affect or influence current behavior. (computer software).
#Brain
  • An organ. (computer hardware).
  • One of the largest and most complex organ in the human body.
  • It's made up of more than 100 billions nerves that communicate in trillions of connections called synapses.

When we learn and remember, we will encode, store, and retrieve the information. The analogy is like a computer.

The Storage (Retain Information)

#Sensory  Memory (SM)
  • The shortest-term element of memory. Incoming information from 5 senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant. If one PAY ATTENTION to the stimuli, it will go to the short-term memory but if not then the information will be lost.
#Short-Term Memory (STM)
  • Very limited storage. From SM, the information will be relayed to STM. In STM, the information must be rehearsal in order to get information to LTM, otherwise will be forgotten. Need to realize that applying memory strategies is important to strengthen the memory ability.
#Long-Term Memory (LTM)
  • This is unlimited storage. From STM, information moved to LTM and stored here for later use (retrieval). If the information is not being used for some time, forgetting may occur. Having strategies during encoding earlier would help in retrieval processes.

How to Improve Your Memory Strategy ?
  • Do space practice. (Involves space time over some period of time for studying.)
  • Break reading material down for some period of time. (2 chapter per day, not all chapter a day before exam.)
  • Rehearsal. (Repeat the information many time.)
  • Use elaboration strategies

What is Concentration ???
Focusing your attention on what you are doing.

Cause of Poor Concentration
  • Lack of attention, interest, and motivation.
  • Distraction from others.
  • Uncomfortable environment.
  • Physiological matters - illness
  • Psychological matters - anxieties

        2. Calculate Amelia GPA for the next semester.

        3. What is Amelia CGPA ?

        4. What is the difference between GPA and CGPA ?
        •  GPA and CGPA are grade systems used in different colleges and universities to assign an evaluative measure of a student’s scholastic abilities.
        • Both GPA and CGPA are reflective of a student’s performance in a semester or the entire course that he has studied, but some colleges give more importance to GPA than CGPA while granting admissions to students.
        •  GPA is calculated for a single term or a year, whereas CGPA is calculated for the entire duration of a course.
        • Many colleges have a cut off GPA for admission into different courses. This means that a student must consistently obtain high GPA.
        • CGPA is for a whole course which means that a high CGPA requires good GPA in all years.
